Cannabis and ADHD
It is thought that ADHD is due to a problem in the brain’s dopamine system, leading to low dopamine levels. Dopamine is the chemical that helps us feel pleasure and motivation. The body’s endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate many brain functions, also influences dopamine. One of its key messengers, called anandamide, can boost dopamine release. Raising anandamide levels has shown promise as a treatment for ADHD. Many cannabinoids, like CBD, CBG and CBC, increase anandamide levels. A small pilot trial using a combination of CBD+THC in a sublingual spray in adults with ADHD found no significant improvement in cognitive performance, but suggested potential benefits for hyperactivity, impulsivity, inattention, and emotional lability, with no evidence of harm.
