Cannabis and Gastrointestinal Disorders
The endocannabinoid system has been found to play an important role in regulating digestion, gut inflammation and other important gastrointestinal functions. Studies suggest that cannabinoids may alleviate symptoms such as abdominal pain, poor appetite, nausea and insomnia associated with gastrointestinal disorders. A 2024 systematic review of four randomized controlled trials found patients with ulcerative colitis who received cannabinoids had significant improvements in disease activity and quality of life compared with placebo. Clinical observations also suggest that patients achieve better outcomes when cannabinoid use is guided by knowledgeable clinicians who can tailor dosing and formulations to individual needs.
