Cannabis and Insomnia

How can plant-based cannabinoids offer benefits for Insomnia? Read Bonni Goldstein MD's summary of the research on cannabis and Insomnia.

One of the main reasons for which people use medical cannabinoids is to treat insomnia and sleep disturbances. Unlike traditional sleep medications, which can come with unwanted side effects and risk of dependence, cannabinoids can offer a safe and effective alternative. A 2017 report providing a comprehensive review of the scientific evidence regarding the health effects of cannabinoids concluded that there is evidence supporting the efficacy in improving short-term sleep outcomes in individuals with sleep disturbances associated with conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain and multiple sclerosis. A recent double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled study found nightly CBN significantly reduced nighttime awakenings and overall sleep disturbances compared to placebo, without affecting daytime fatigue.
